  1. Increased guest nights at hotels in January

    An increase in both Norwegian and foreign hotel guest nights in January this year, contributed to a 6.7 per cent increase in hotel guest nights compared with January 2023.

  2. Increase in foreign guest nights contributed to growth in 2023

    There were 37 million guest nights at commercial accommodation establishments in 2023. This was 917 000 more than in 2022, and the increase is attributed to a higher number of foreign guest nights.

    There were 2.7 million hotel guest nights in June this year. This is a 1.8 per cent increase compared to June last year. A large increase in foreign guest nights made up for dwindling Norwegian guest nights at hotels.

    Foreign guest nights increased by 16 per cent in May compared to the same month last year. Never before have so many foreigners stayed at Norwegian accommodation establishments in the month of May.

    There were almost 1.7 million hotel guest nights in April this year. This is roughly the same number as in April last year. A large increase in foreign guest nights made up for dwindling Norwegian guest nights at hotels.

    The number of foreign guest nights in August was at the same level as before the pandemic. There were almost 2 million foreign guest nights, an increase of 129 per cent compared to August 2021. Norwegian overnight stays fell by 8 per cent in the same period.

    4.5 million guest nights were registered for June this year, the highest number ever recorded for the month of June. There was a large increase in foreign guest nights in addition to increased Norwegian guest nights compared to June 2021.

    Guest nights increased by 88 percent year on year, and never before have so many Norwegians stayed at Norwegian accommodation establishments in May. Guest nights are at a similar level to February 2019 when adjusted for seasonality.

    2,4 million guest nights were registered for April this year, the highest number ever recorded for the month of April. There was a large increase in guest nights for both Norwegians and foreigners compared with April 2021.

  23. Record for Norwegian guest nights at hotels in March

    After two years with travel restrictions in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of both Norwegian and foreign guest nights increased to the same level as before the pandemic.

  24. 92 per cent increase in guest nights in February

    All restriction in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic were lifted in mid-February. This contributed to a sharp increase in overnight stays for both Norwegians and foreigners compared with February 2021.

    There was a 51 per cent increase in guest nights in January this year compared to the same month last year. Hotel guest nights contributed the most to this increase.

  26. A higher willingness to travel in the second year of the pandemic

    Despite a tough year for the tourism industry in 2021, there was a 14 per cent increase in guest nights compared to 2020. This increase was due to fewer restrictions in 2021 and an increased willingness to travel domestically.

    The number of guest nights at hotels more than doubled from November 2020 to November 2021, when guest nights reached the same level as before the pandemic. However, this trend looks unlikely to continue as new restrictions were introduced on December 7th, 2021.

    6.6 million guest nights were registered for July this year, the highest number recorded by Statistics Norway for a single month. Many of these guest nights were at hotels in this holiday month and guest nights at camping sites continued to be popular among Norwegians.

    There was a sharp increase in domestic guest nights in June this year, compared to June last year. During June, several restrictions related to social distancing and travel were relaxed, allowing Norwegians to travel.

    The trend of few guest nights for Norwegian commercial accommodation establishments continued in May. There was an increase in the number of guest nights compared to May last year, but this was still very low compared to the normal pre-pandemic numbers for May.

    April was another month of historically few guest nights for Norwegian commercial accommodation establishments. Even though the number of guest nights was more than double the numbers in April last year, they were still under half the levels of April 2019.

  36. More guest nights at camping sites

    The timing of Easter increased the number of guest nights at camping sites and holiday dwellings in March this year compared to March 2020.
