7 in 10 tonnes of goods were transported across the border by foreign lorries

In total, 282.2 million tonnes of goods were transported to, from and within Norway by Norwegian and foreign lorries in 2016. Foreign lorries accounted for barely 5 per cent of the total amount of goods, according to new figures from the statistics Road goods transport by foreign lorries.

Increased transport performance by foreign lorries

Overall, transport performance within Norway and between Norway and abroad accounted for 30.3 billion tonne kilometres in 2016. Transport performance performed by foreign lorries amounted to 9.0 billion tonne kilometres in connection with trips to, from or in Norway; 10 per cent more than in 2015. Norwegian lorries’ transport performance totalled 21.0 billion tonne kilometres, of which 18.5 billion was driving in Norway. This means that the foreign lorries accounted for 31 per cent of total transport performance in 2016.

Polish lorries have greatest cabotage

Polish lorries carried most cabotage in Norway in 2016, and transported 571 900 tonnes of goods from one place in Norway to another. Polish lorries accounted for about 17 per cent of all goods transported to, from and within Norway. The Polish-registered lorries also had most cross trade transport between Norway and abroad; 1.6 million tonnes of goods were driven between Norway and countries other than Poland.

A total of 1.6 million tonnes of goods were transported by cabotage in Norway in 2016. This corresponds to just 1 per cent of all goods carried by Norwegian and foreign lorries in Norway in the last year. Norwegian lorries carried 73 700 tonnes of goods of freight cabotage overseas in 2016. The cabotage numbers are relatively small in the big picture, and the numbers vary somewhat between the individual years. This indicates that there is some uncertainty associated with the figures.

Increase in cross trade driving

Foreign lorries transported 4.8 million tonnes of goods to or from Norway in cross trade transport between Norway and abroad in 2016, compared with 4.2 million tonnes of goods in the previous year. Transport performance amounted to 4.1 billion tonne kilometres in the same period.
