The CRE is a comprehensive and quality-assured register, and represents a common population for the business and economic statistics. The CRE is affiliated to the Norwegian Central Coordinating Register for Legal Entities (CCRE) and is continuously updated with changes made in the CCRE. Statistics Norway is responsible for updating selected unit types and characteristics in the CCRE.

Access to data in the CRE is regulated under Section 14 of the Statistics Act,
‘Access to data to produce statistical results and analyses’. Access is only given to data that is to be used for statistics and/or analyses (including research).

Complete description of variables in the CRE

The main rule is that data must be deidentified before access can be granted, but exceptions are permitted under the Statistics Act for basic data, i.e. characteristics of enterprises (and establishments) that are fundamental to the economic and business statistics and are registered in the CCRE. The basic data contains the following variables:

For enterprises: organisation number, registered name, edited name, postal address, business address, telephone number, fax number, email address, website address, date of incorporation/registration, industry classification, organisational structure, institutional sector code, status (deleted/not deleted), number of employees, corporate group affiliation, share capital/subordinated loan capital and roles.

Activity/unit in an enterprise with more than one activity:

Organisation number, registered name, edited name, unit name, postal address, location address, numerical address, basic statistical unit, coordinates, telephone number, fax number, start-up date, industry classification, status and number of employees.

Section 1 of the Statistics Regulations sets out who may be granted access to data to produce statistical results and analyses.

Enquiries regarding access to data from the CRE for these purposes can be sent by email to virksomhetsregister@ssb.no. The application must stipulate the reason for access. Statistics Norway will determine whether access is to be granted. Statistics Norway may also set conditions for the use and storage of the data. The supply of data from the CRE will be priced based on the principle of cost coverage for time accrued. Where an access agreement is to be entered into, a quote will be provided for the price of the service.

For access to more data than that included in the CRE, contact mikrodata@ssb.no. More information on access to microdata from Statistics Norway

It should be noted that basic data in the CCRE is available free of charge as open data from the Agency for Public Management and eGovernment (Difi) and the Brønnøysund Register Centre. Further details about open data from the Brønnøysund Register Centre (brreg.no)
