The national broadcasting license fee in the Consumer price index

Published:

The national broadcasting license fee in Norway is abolished from 2020. The license fee will be removed from the Consumer price index (CPI) and the Harmonized index (HICP) as well.

The scope of the CPI and HICP is set by household final monetary consumption expenditure and the indices measures the price development of goods and services within the scope. The national broadcasting license fee in Norway has been regarded as payment for purchases of broadcasting services. As of 2020 this license fee has been abolished and national broadcasting will be financed by direct taxes. As direct taxes are out of scope of the CPI and the HICP, the national broadcasting license fee will be removed from the CPI and the HICP. The abolition of this license fee will not affect CPI or HICP. This is in line with the abolition of the national broadcasting license fee in Sweden and Denmark.
