Correction of figures for sales of marine gas oils and auto diesel

Published:

The figures for sales of marine gas oils and auto diesel have been corrected dating back to 2012. Prior to this, the sales figures obtained by Statistics Norway were too low.

Here you can see the statistics on sales of petroleum products for 2020.

The correction has led to an increase in the figures for sales of marine gas oils and auto diesel from 2012 onwards, while the pre-2012 figures are not affected by the change.

The following statistics are affected by the correction:

Changes in the levels in the statistics on sales of marine gas oils and auto diesel require an upward adjustment of the level of greenhouse gas emissions from 2012 onwards. The change means that more than 674 million litres of marine gas oils and auto diesel were added to the petroleum statistics for 2019.

A rough calculation shows that this totals just under 1.8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide for 2019. How much of this will end up being included in the total greenhouse gas emissions in Norway for 2019 partly depends on the distribution between fishing and domestic and international shipping. Here you can see the emission factors from different energy sources.

Together with the other sources for the statistics on emissions to air, the effect on the statistics (levels and changes) will not be known until the emission statistics are released on 8 June.
