Increase in cultural-historical buildings

In 2006, Norwegian museums administered 4 894 cultural-historical buildings, an increase of 129 from 2005. Museums in Hedmark county had the highest number of cultural-historical buildings open to the public, with 377 out of 721 in total.

In 2006, Norwegian museums administered 4 894 cultural-historical buildings, an increase of 129 from 2005. 60 per cent of the buildings were open to the public.

Norwegian museums had 9.3 million visitors in 2006, an increase of 250 000 compared with 2005, and slightly more than two visits per Norwegian. Almost 40 per cent of the visitors went to museums in Oslo. 4.5 million were paying visitors, a decrease of 270 000 from 2005.

Norwegian museums had just over 35 million objects in their collections 2006 - an increase of 800 000 from 2005. The bulk of the collections are photographs and natural history objects, with 17 million and 11 million objects respectively.

Exhibitions constitute an important part of the museums' activities. Norwegian museums held 2 737 exhibitions in 2006, an increase of 79 exhibitions from 2005. More than half of the exhibitions were basic exhibitions, whereas travelling exhibitions represented about 10 per cent.

The museum statistics for 2006 cover 175 museums. This is lower than in previous years and thus reflects the ongoing consolidation process in the Norwegian museum sector. The total income for the museums was NOK 2.8 billion, of which NOK 1.9 billion was public contributions. Total expenditure for the museums was NOK 2.7 billion. The number of man-years were 3 579, of which 3 397 were remunerated man-years. Of the remunerated man-years, 2 517 were by permanent employees.
