Meat production, 2003

106 000 tonnes of pork, 85 300 tonnes of beef and veal, 49 000 tonnes of poultry and 24 400 tonnes of mutton and lamb were approved during 2003. Compared with 2002, the quantities of poultry and pork increased, while quantities of beef and mutton declined. Since 1990 the amount of poultry butchered has more than doubled, from 19 500 tonnes to 49 000 tonnes. Just from 2002 to 2003 alone the amount of poultry butchered increased by 7 per cent.

Pork accounted for 40 per cent of the approved carcasses in 2003, beef 32 per cent, poultry 18 per cent and mutton 9 per cent.
