New record low sea catch of salmon

The total catch of wild salmon and sea trout in the Norwegian fjords amounted to 291 tonnes in 2009. This is 97 tonnes, or 25 per cent, less than in 2008.

As from 2008, the salmon fisheries with stationary gear in the sea have been strongly regulated. This resulted in record low catches last year, and a further reduction this year. The catches in the counties of Finnmark, Nord-Trøndelag and Rogaland decreased most.

Half the catch taken in Finnmark

Finnmark is the most important county for sea catches of salmon, with a total catch of 135 tonnes in 2009. This amounted to 48 per cent of the total catch of salmon.
