The Norwegian Food Safety Authority (NFSA) had less inspection activity in 2012 compared to 2011. The number of supervisions was almost unchanged for most areas, but an exception was domestic animals, which had a 16 per cent fall in supervision activity.

The fall in the number of inspections was despite a strong focus on animal welfare. This can be explained by the successful intensive activity in this field in 2011. For the other inspection areas changes were only small, which indicates stable activity. A total of 39 639 inspections were carried out in selected areas for plants, land animals, fish, drinking water and food, which is a decline of 8 per cent compared to 2011.

More efficient development of regulations

One of the NFSA’s main roles is to develop and administer the legislation covering food, plants, animals, fish and drinking water. This legislation in many cases originates from the EEA agreement, and the NFSA’s task is to implement these into the Norwegian legal system. In 2012, 78 per cent of the EEA regulations were implemented within the deadline. Compared to earlier years, this was a considerable increase, with 57 per cent of implementations in 2011.

More global challenges

The NFSA experienced more activity related to border control, import and export. These figures show 20 per cent more inspected consignments from countries outside the EEA area and an increase of 16 per cent in export certificates issued for fish and fish products.
