Decline in production of potatoes in 2009

The yield of potatoes decreased by 65 700 tonnes from 2008 to 2009 and amounted to 332 700 tonnes. The average decare yield of potatoes was 2 400 kilos in 2009 and 2 800 kilos in 2008.

From 2008 to 2009, the yield of all meadows for mowing increased slightly, to a total of 2.7 million tonnes.

The total yield of meadows for mowing converted by dry matter into hay, corresponds to 620 kilos of hay per decare.

At the first cut in 2009, yield from 31 per cent of the harvested area of meadows for mowing was stored into silos as silage, whereas yield from 62 per cent was harvested as round bales. Corresponding figures for the later cut were 28 and 69 per cent respectively. The grass from 7 per cent of the first cut was dried as hay, while 2 per cent was harvested as hay at later cut.

Other crops for green fodder and silage

The total yield of other crops for green fodder and silage showed a further decline in 2009. Rye grass covered 43 per cent and green forage mixtures 54 per cent of the total area of other fodder crops of 120 000 decares. The average decare yield was 2 400 kilos for rye grass and 1 400 kilos for green forage mixtures and grain for green fodder.

1 million tonnes of grain

The total grain production in 2009 was 1.02 million tonnes, compared with 1.39 million tonnes in 2008. The average decare yield of grain was 339 kilos. For further information, please see Grain and oil seeds, area and production .
