Three-month change: broad increase in manufacturing output

According to seasonally-adjusted figures, manufacturing output saw a clear increase of 1.6 per cent from November 2017 to January 2018 compared with the previous three-month period. The overall growth in manufacturing is related to an increase in both petroleum-related manufacturing and in other parts of Norwegian manufacturing. Ships, boats and oil platforms contributed most to the overall increase, and went up 4.9 per cent. This increase is particularly related to growth within building of ships. In addition, basic metals also had a strong increase due to high production of non-ferrous metals.

Monthly change: production decline from December 2017 to January 2018

According to seasonally-adjusted figures, manufacturing output declined by 2 per cent from December 2017 to January 2018. Food products together with computer and electrical equipment contributed most to this decrease. For food products, the decrease is particularly related to lower production within processing and preserving of fish.

Twelve-month change: solid output growth in the Euro area and in Norway in December 2017

According to calendar-adjusted figures, Norwegian manufacturing output had a solid increase of 3.2 per cent from December 2016 to December 2017. Food products contributed the most to the growth, followed by the industry grouping refined petroleum, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Estimated figures from Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office, indicate that output in manufacturing in the Euro area increased strongly by 5.9 per cent in the same period.

Three-month change: minor changes in total industrial production (PII)

According to seasonally-adjusted figures, the total production index (PII) covering extraction, mining, manufacturing and electricity supply saw a minor decrease of 0.1 per cent from November 2017 to January 2018 compared with the previous three-month period. Extraction of natural gas saw a decline of 7.7 per cent, while extraction of crude petroleum went down 0.6 per cent. For more details about oil and gas extraction for January 2018, see the press release from The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate.

Within support activities for petroleum and natural gas extraction, output increased by 2.6 per cent from November 2017 to January 2018 compared with the previous three-month period.

In the same period, mining and quarrying went up 3.3 per cent, while production within Norwegian electricity supply declined by 1.1 per cent.

Updated weights in the PII in 2018

The weights in the index of industrial production (PII) are updated by the transition to a new year. The basis for the weights in the index of industrial production (PII) is value added at factor prices from the annual structure statistics for oil and gas, manufacturing, electricity and district heating for 2016. The value added figures are updated to the situation at the end of 2017 with rates of change from the quarterly national accounts, and volume figures from the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate.

Within manufacturing, the industries food products and repair and installation of machinery were the industries that had the largest increase in weights from 2017 to 2018. On the other hand, weights for machinery and equipment and basic metals had the largest decline from 2017 to 2018. For the total PII, the weight for manufacturing increased, while the weight for extraction and related services fell.

Productivity factors

As of January 2018, updated productivity factors will be included in the calculation of the index of industrial production (PII) covering extraction, mining, manufacturing and electricity supply. The factors are based on annual volume change in GDP per hour worked for the relevant industries and are an average from the last five years. This information is collected from the annual national accounts.
