Flat trend in manufacturing output continues

Published:

Norwegian manufacturing output was nearly unchanged in the fourth quarter of 2019 compared to the third quarter, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. The long term trend now shows an almost flat production development since June 2019.

The index level for Norwegian manufacturing in the fourth quarter amounted to 119.4 (2005=100). The corresponding figure for the previous quarter was 119.6. After steady growth since May 2018, the long term trend for the second half of 2019 shows that the output increase has leveled out (see figure 1).

Three-month change: Strong growth in ships, boats and oil platforms

According to seasonally-adjusted figures, manufacturing output was nearly unchanged in the fourth quarter of 2019 compared with the third quarter, with only a slight decline of 0.2 per cent. While there was a feeble or negative development among several of the manufacturing industries in this period, building of ships, boats and oil platforms experienced a strong growth of 6.5 per cent. This increase was related to growth within production of oil platforms.

On the other hand, basic metals contributed the most to dampen the overall development, with a production decline of 4.6 per cent. The decline was partly related to maintenance work as well as to weaker market conditions. Wood and wood products, together with the industry grouping rubber, plastic and mineral production were also among the industries that experienced a decline in this quarter.

Monthly change: unchanged manufacturing output from November to December

According to seasonally-adjusted figures, manufacturing output was unchanged from November to December 2019. The industry grouping refined petroleum, chemicals and pharmaceutical products contributed the most to pull the overall development in a positive direction, while machinery and equipment contributed the most to dampen the overall development.

Yearly change: increase in manufacturing output from 2018 to 2019

Norwegian manufacturing output saw an overall yearly increase of 2.7 per cent in 2019 compared with 2018. There was a clear growth in the first half of the year, before the growth levelled out in the second half. Building of ships, boats and oil platforms saw the strongest growth, with an increase of as much as 34 per cent. Both building of ships, and building of oil platforms experienced a clear growth. However, while the production development within the former levelled out during the year, the development within the latter continued to increase strongly throughout the year.

On the other hand, the industry grouping refined petroleum, chemicals and pharmaceutical products contributed the most to curb the overall growth in 2019, with a decline of 3.1 per cent.

Nearly unchanged production development in the Euro area in November

Estimated figures from Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office, indicate that manufacturing output in the Euro area was almost unchanged from October to November 2019. In the same period, Norwegian manufacturing output saw a marginal decline of 0.4 per cent. Sweden, on the other hand, saw an increase of 1.8 per cent, while Denmark had a production decline of 5.2 per cent.

Three-month change: Extraction of oil and natural gas contributed to a clear increase in the overall production index

According to seasonally-adjusted figures, the total production index (PII) covering extraction, mining, manufacturing and electricity supply saw a strong increase of 5.3 per cent in the fourth quarter compared to the third quarter of 2019. Extraction of crude petroleum increased strongly by around 14 per cent, which can partly be explained by production from a new oil field that opened in this quarter. Extraction of natural gas also saw an increase of 7.4 per cent. For more details about oil and gas extraction in this quarter, see the press release from The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate.

Within support activities for petroleum and natural gas extraction, there was an output increase equivalent to 2.6 per cent in the fourth quarter, compared with the previous quarter. This growth is partly related to an investment increase in the Norwegian oil and gas sector

In the same period, mining and quarrying saw a decline of 4.5 per cent, and Norwegian electricity supply decreased by 4.1 per cent.
