  1. Reconciling estimates of the long-term earnings effect of fertility

This paper presents novel methodological and empirical contributions to the child penalty literature. We propose a new estimator that combines elements from standard event study and instrumental variable estimators and demonstrate their relatedness.

  2. Shared residence after union dissolution. Recent developments and characteristics

This report investigates recent developments and general characteristics of the practice of shared residence in 2020. The report is based on the survey Contact Arrangements and Residential Arrangements 2020, and it focuses on parents who have previously been cohabiting or married.

  3. Can the child penalty be reduced?

Children cause large earnings drops for mothers but not fathers, a stylized fact known as the “child penalty” that explains a substantial portion of remaining gender income gaps.

  4. Marriage before children? First family formation among the children of immigrants in Norway

Differences in the timing and pathway into family life provide insights into the social distance between majority and immigrant-background groups. Increasing similarity in these processes across immigrant generations may indicate blurring of group distinctions.

  5. Origin and residential influences on the first partnership choices of the children of immigrants in Norway

Using Norwegian register data on migrant-background individuals born 1985 to 2001 who were either native born or who immigrated as children or teens, in combination with data from the World Marriage Database, we investigate how residential partner markets and marriage behavior in countries of origin shape partner choice and choice of union type in Norway
